Pumpkins on the Bridge - Halloween at Bynum Front Porch

By mid-afternoon on Halloween, Bynum starts to feel like a story you’ve stepped into. The sun sits low over the Haw River, catching the tin roof of the old general store, that crooked little landmark with paint the color of faded postcards. Out front, tables are piled with pumpkins, and neighbors lean over them, carving faces by the dozen. You hear the scrape of spoons on hollow shells, the pop of candle lids, the laughter that rises when someone’s pumpkin turns out a little stranger than planned.

The hot dog vendor is already busy, steam curling into the cool air, mingling with the smell of fresh-cut pumpkin and woodsmoke drifting from somewhere down the road. Kids in capes and princess dresses chase each other across the lawn, their plastic swords clanging, their wings slipping sideways. Someone’s wearing a witch hat with a sunflower stuck in the brim. Someone else has turned a pair of overalls into a scarecrow costume.

As the light fades, folks start carrying their jack-o’-lanterns toward the bridge. It’s an old one — been closed to cars for years — but tonight it’s the town’s glowing heartbeat. One by one, candles are lit, and soon the bridge is lined with orange faces: grins, grimaces, wide-eyed wonder. The river catches the light and carries it away in ripples.

For a while, everyone just stands there, breathing it in. The bridge under their feet, the stars overhead, the hum of conversation and crickets sharing the night. And it feels like something more than a holiday — it feels like the kind of thing you keep in your bones, the memory you’ll pull out years from now when you need to remember what it means to belong somewhere.

Tonight, the town is together.

Susie Crate & Joe Newberry Show @ BFP!

Susie and Joe have been playing and singing together since the early 80s. They performed together in The Piedmont Hepcats (along with Ted Ehrhard and Allen Cottrell) and in The Radio Rangers (with Carl Jones and Nowell Creadick). They now rejoin forces to remember old songs and sing some new ones.

Susie Crate likes to think she has come full circle in her storytelling and singing. After a decade of singing and storytelling in the Piedmont Triangle from the early-80s to early-90s, Susie began traversing the globe, mostly in the direction of Siberia where she ended up building an academic career researching cultural adaptations to change overall and specifically to climate change. Now she has returned to her home in Bynum to begin the next chapter of her life and she brings stories and songs both old and new.

Known around the world for his clawhammer banjo playing, Joe Newberry is also a powerful guitarist, singer and songwriter. The Gibson Brothers’ version of his song “Singing As We Rise,” featuring guest vocalist Ricky Skaggs, won an  IBMA “Gospel Recorded Performance” Award. With Eric Gibson, he shared an IBMA “Song of the Year” Award for “They Called It Music.” A longtime and frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, he was a featured singer on the Transatlantic Sessions 2016 tour of the U.K. with fiddler Aly Bain and Dobro master Jerry Douglas, and at the Transatlantic Session's debut at Merlefest in 2017.  In addition to performing solo, he plays in a duo with mandolin icon Mike Compton, and also performs with the dynamic fiddler and step-dancer April Verch."

Holiday Bazaar at Bynum Front Porch

Bynum Front Porch during the holidays, covered in snow

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Bynum wakes up with a sparkle in the air. Down by the old general store, the front porch is strung with garland and twinkle lights, and the smell of Bynum’s famous chicken cracker stew drifts out to meet the crowd.

It’s Holiday Bazaar day, and the place hums like a hive. Inside, tables are stacked with local treasures — hand-thrown pottery still warm from the kiln, jewel-toned scarves, hand-poured soaps wrapped in brown paper, and framed photographs that catch the Haw River in every season. Paintings lean in little clusters, each one carrying the signature of a neighbor you’ve probably shared a laugh with. Shoppers drift from table to table, warm cider in one hand, gift list in the other.

Outside, the Bynum Front Porch Pickers are in full swing. Banjo, fiddle, guitar — the music rolls out over the lawn, spilling into the street where folks line up for hot stew, talking and laughing in puffs of white breath.

And just steps from the front porch, another tradition is in full gear — Christmas tree pickup. Trucks and SUVs pull in and out, loading up fresh-cut pines that will soon stand in living rooms all over Chatham County. You can smell them even from the porch, sharp and green, blending with the scent of stew and cider until the whole town smells like the holidays.

By early afternoon, everyone’s arms are full — pottery wrapped in tissue, soaps tied with twine, photographs tucked under coats — and the sound of bluegrass follows them all the way back to their cars. The Bynum General Store stands in the center of it all, a little piece of Christmas magic, right here on the banks of the Haw.

Mill Town Yarns presents Michael Reno Harrell and Josh Goforth @ BFP

Saturday, February 7 at 7:00

Mill Town Yarns performance series presents:

Back by popular demand--

Michael Reno Harrell, this time with Josh Goforth,  extremely popular internationally-known musicians/storytellers, performing together!

Don’t miss this rare opportunity! Due to limited seating, this is a ticketed show, and tickets will go fast!!

Buy $20 tickets

Michael Reno Harrell is an award winning songwriter, a published author, a nationally known storyteller and a visual artist. And, he’s from the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina where all those things are as much a part of life as breathing. Michael’s talents have taken him to forty-four states and several foreign countries over his over fifty plus year career. His work is based in life experiences that reflect the culture of his mountain roots, which go back eight generations. But Michael’s stories, songs and artworks reflect not only the southern experience, but also American’s story. His work, in whichever form it may take, all comes down to one thing...story.

One could compare Michael's performances to his granddaddy's pocket knife: well worn and familiar feeling, but razor sharp and with a point. His brand of entertainment appeals to a very diverse audience.

Michael's natural knack for storytelling, in print, song and spoken word has earned him praise from not only the music community but from the literary and storytelling worlds as well, having had the honor of being a Featured Teller at the National Storytelling Festival and Teller In Residence at the International Storytelling Center, as well as performing at major music events like MerleFest and the Walnut Valley Festival. Along with his performances, Michael often conducts workshops in songwriting and storytelling as well.

His humor and wit, as well as the emotional depth of his work, keep his fan base growing and staying tuned in for whatever comes next. Don’t miss the chance to experience what those faithful fans keep returning again and again to enjoy.

Josh Goforth is a highly accomplished storyteller and acoustic musician, playing close to 20 different instruments, who has performed in all 50 US states, all over Europe, Asia, and Australia; he’s performed at The Grand Ole Opry, The Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall!

He must have been born musical—he was already playing piano in church at the age of four— but it was an experience he had in the sixth grade that really lit the fuse of his precocious musical career. A performance at Goforth's middle school by Sheila Kay Adams caused him to start thinking about the musical heritage and stories of his native Madison County, NC. Josh was able to listen and learn from local masters like Gordon and Arvil Freeman and Jerry Adams.. After high school he went to East Tennessee State University to study music education,a nd to be a part of ETSU's famous Bluegrass and Country Music Program.

In 2000, he played fiddle for the movie Songcatcher, both onscreen and on the soundtrack. He has toured extensively with a variety of ensembles, including the ETSU Bluegrass band, David Holt, Laura Boosinger, and with several bluegrass bands like Appalachian Trail, the Josh Goforth Trio, the Steep Canyon Rangers and Open Road.

In 2000, 2003, and 2005, he was named Fiddler of the Festival at Fiddler's Grove and, after winning the third title, was designated "Master Fiddler" and retired from that competition. In 2009 he was nominated for a Grammy for his album with David Holt entitled "Cutting Loose". He currently is on faculty at the Academy for the Arts in Asheville and performs all over the world.

Bynum’s Byte Night happens every other Thursday from 6-8 PM at the Bynum Front Porch! It’s a weekly tech hangout for anyone curious about computers, electronics, or AI - whether you’re fixing a glitchy device, exploring creative and design tools, or just want to talk digital life with neighbors. We’ve even got a virtual reality (VR) headset on hand if you want to step into another world for a bit. No pressure, no jargon—just a space to learn, share, and connect. Bring your questions, your projects, or just come see what others are up to. All skill levels welcome!

Contact Helbragga (John G.) @ 919-593-3559 with any questions.
